About California’s Wage and Hour Laws

California’s wage and hour laws are designed to protect employees from unfair treatment in the workplace. These laws essentially ensure that employees are not overworked and underpaid, for example. Some of California’s wage and hour laws are relayed below for your convenience:

  • Tipped employees cannot be paid anything less than minimum wage.
  • Minimum wage in California is $11 for employers with 25 or fewer employees and $12 for employers with more than 26 employees (note: these are 2019 rates).
  • Employees working more than 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week must be paid overtime pay (at a rate of time-and-a-half).
  • Employees working 12 hours or more per day must be paid double-pay.
  • Employees working seven consecutive days must be paid overtime pay for the first 8 hours of the seventh day and double-pay for any additional hours works in excess of 8 hours.
  • Employees have the right to a 10-minute break period for ever four hours worked.
  • Employees have the right to a meal break of at least 30 minutes to be taken no later than at the 5th hour of work.
  • Employees working more than 12 hours in a day have the right to a second 30 minute meal break period.
